Fence Picket Planter

EXPERT GARDENING & WOODWORKING ADVICE

Building a wooden planter out of fence pickets is a relatively simple woodworking project that can be a great addition to your garden or outdoor space. Here's a basic step-by-step guide on how to build a wooden planter using fence pickets:

These are not fence picket planters but ones I made from scraps in my shop. Many use fence pickets to build these because they are low cost.

Materials You'll Need

Design Your Planter

Decide on the size and shape of your planter. You can make a simple rectangular box, a square planter, or any other shape you prefer. Consider the dimensions and ensure it's appropriate for the plants you want to grow.

Cut the Fence Pickets

Measure and cut your fence pickets into the required lengths for the sides of the planter. For a rectangular planter, you'll need four equal-length pieces for the sides.

Assemble the Planter Box

Arrange the cut pickets to form the sides of the planter box. Use a carpenter's square to ensure the corners are square, and adjust as needed. You can attach the pickets by using screws or nails. You can also apply wood glue before fastening them for added strength. Make sure the bottom edges of the pickets are flush.

Create the Bottom

Measure the inside dimensions of your planter and cut more fence pickets to fit as the bottom. Attach them to the sides using screws or nails, ensuring they are evenly spaced for drainage.

Optional: Add Feet

To keep the planter off the ground and allow for better drainage, you can attach small wooden feet to the bottom corners. This will help prevent the planter from sitting directly on the ground.

Sand and Finish

Sand the rough edges and surfaces of your planter to make it smooth. This step is optional, but it can enhance the appearance and feel of the planter. You can also apply a wood finish or outdoor paint to protect the wood and add a decorative touch.

Drainage Holes

If your planter doesn't have adequate drainage holes, consider drilling a few holes in the bottom to ensure proper drainage for your plants.

Plant and Enjoy

Once your planter is complete, you can fill it with soil and plant your favorite flowers, herbs, or other plants.

Remember to choose appropriate materials that can withstand outdoor conditions, and consider using corrosion-resistant hardware to ensure your planter lasts a long time. This project is customizable, so you can adapt the design and size to suit your specific needs and preferences.
